Lent is traditionally a time when Christians remember how Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days before he began his public ministry. It is also the lead up to Easter when we celebrate how death was beaten forever. Many people observe Lent by giving up a special food they like but nowadays people stop everything from Facebook to chocolate.
Helping Hands is joining Tearfund in a carbon fast for Lent. This is because we recognise that climate change is hurting our friends in Uganda and Kenya so we are choosing to think and pray for them during this time. This is also because we believe that our combined actions can bring life in death threatening situations. At the "office" we are using minimal lighting for 40 days and avoiding all meat every Monday as a simple way to reduce our carbon footprint for the period. Let us know if you are joining in and perhaps this will become a lifestyle for many of us.
