Farming for the Future 21st January 2013

Hungry children are not happy children as we all know! However, when a little girl is hungry each day of her young life the problems go deeper and her health starts to suffer. In Uganda, where one in ten children die before the age of five, over a third of these deaths can be attributed to "under nutrition". This term is used for children who suffer from hunger and repeated infections. Feeding programmes are one answer but they are hard to sustain and create a dependency culture in the long term. Helping Hands has decided to begin investing in the "grass-root" solution of improving farming techniques so as to increase yields. In this way we believe that there will be more food on the table and cash in the hand for the families we know and love. Mark Johnson is overseeing our test plots on our plot at Mirembe which Moses Nakitembe will undertake. In a few months time we will be able to see how traditional methods compare with the new techniques... watch this blog for updates.
